Roland MDX-50 Milling Machine Features
SRP® Technology
Subtractive Rapid Prototyping (SRP) has several advantages over additive rapid prototyping, also called “3D printing.” SRP devices cost significantly less to own and operate due to lower material costs and no annual maintenance contracts while producing prototypes out of a wider variety of non-proprietary materials with greater precision and better surface finish.
Functional Prototypes
Like all Roland SRP devices, the Roland MDX-50 can mill a wide range of low cost, non-proprietary materials including ABS, delrin, nylon, acrylic, modeling wax, PVC, wood, modeling boards, tooling boards and more. This lets designers and engineers create functional prototypes to test how well products will actually work. Handled by market focus groups, these prototypes must perform like the final manufactured product and survive a barrage of physical tests, including thermal and structural trials. For example, toothbrush prototypes undergo in-vivo testing for hand fit, brush reach and handle deflection.
Mill Fine Details and Smooth Finishes
With an improved drive system, machine rigidity and enhanced drive mechanics, the Roland MDX-50 mills incredibly smooth and accurate prototypes for testing structure, function, and assembly with other parts. A machining area of 15.8”(400mm) (X) x 12”(305mm) (Y) x 5.3”(135mm) (Z) supports production of large single objects or batch production of smaller multiple parts.
High Precision
The Roland MDX-50’s high-precision spindle decreases vibration within the unit and produces extremely accurate models. It achieves resolutions up to 0.000039 inches per step and creates the most accurate prototypes for complex snap-fits. The Roland MDX-50 also generates a smooth surface finish that requires little to no post finishing work.
Free Your Time
The automated features of the Roland MDX-50 enables users to mill with speed and confidence. Combine the 5-station ATC and optional rotary axis unit for the most automated and precise operation:
- Auto-sensing function corrects the tool length to ensure milling accuracy for every job
- Optional rotary axis for effortless production of complex surfaces:
- Includes a wide, self-centering headstock and tailstock workpiece clamps
- Auto-rotates materials from 0-to-360 degrees
- Indexes for 2-sided, 4-sided and custom angles
Simplified Machine Setup
The Roland MDX-50 reduces the time and effort of machine set-up with an expanded work area, inner machine lighting for clear visibility, and an included tool adopter that enables instant installation of ATC tools - requiring no wrench or additional tools.
Built in Control Panel
With a built in control panel at the front of the Roland MDX-50 unit, almost all operations can be completed from the unit itself. Users can perform operating functions and view the current job status without needing to constantly check their PC.
Safe Clean and Convenient Production
The Roland MDX-50 is designed for use in studio, office, and educational environments. A newly improved door ensures extra-safe operation while waste is contained in a built-in debris collection drawer.
Speedy Production
Roland SRP devices typically create parts faster than a 3D printer. According to Todd Grimm’s independent study of RP systems, the SRP process saves time by producing parts that are smooth and precise right off the machine. Additive systems, on the other hand, typically require time-consuming post finishing processes.
Included Software for Experts and Beginners
Roland SRP Player CAM Software
The Roland MDX-50 is packaged with Roland SRP Player CAM software, ideal for rapid prototyping and custom rapid manufacturing applications. Roland SRP Player was created specifically for designers and engineers to make SRP prototype parts quickly and easily in five easy steps using an easy to follow, intuitive workflow.
SRP Player accepts a wide range of file formats including industry standard .stl. As a result, it produces superior parts with smooth surfaces and accurate, tight-fit precision. The software has been updated to match the advanced functions of the Roland MDX-50. With 16 materials and all of our tools in our tool-kits 1/64"-1/4" pre-loaded in the software tool and material library, with feeds speeds and all milling settings SRP Player could not be easier to use.
Roland ClickMill Software
Bundled Roland ClickMill software enables direct control of the Roland MDX-50 for surfacing, drilling holes, cutting pockets and other 2D milling processes, all without accessing CAD or CAM software.
G-Code Support
The Roland MDX-50 supports G-Code NC programming language. This makes it well suited for both professional and educational applications. This also allows the Roland MDX-50 compatibility with popular software programs including Mastercam, EdgeCAM, SurfCAM, GibbsCAM, Visual Mill, HSM Works, CAM Works and more.
Roland Virtual Control Panel (VPanel)
Roland VPanel serves as a computer-based virtual control panel with all of the functionality of the physical on-board control panel, as well as tool life management and email alerts.
Roland ZCL-50 Rotary Axis Unit (Optional)
With the Roland ZCL-50 optional rotary axis, the Roland MDX-50 performs unattended four-sided milling. When one side is completed, the part is automatically rotated until all sides have been milled. This saves time and lets you continue on with your design work while your prototypes are being created.
The Roland ZCL-50 optional rotary axis unit supports materials up to 14.96” long by 4.72” in diameter (380mm long by 120mm in diameter)
- Auto-sensing function calibrates the rotary axis unit to the machine automatically, includes calibration bar used for automatic recognition.
- Roland SRP Player Recognizes the Rotary Axis Unit and plans the cutting accordingly.
- Uses the center of material when cutting so no material preparation is required like surfacing. You can use rough unprepared un-square materials right off the shelf.
- Indexes for 2-sided milling, 4-sided milling and too custom angles.
- Auto-rotates materials from 0-to-360 degrees.
- Can also operate as a live 4 axis rotary for lathe type cutting of parts.
- Includes a wide, self-centering headstock and tailstock workpiece clamps that makes loading round or square material easy.
- Includes a tool touch off sensor that measure the length of the tool and sets the z automatically so tool touch offs are not required.
Perfect Office Fit
The Roland MDX-50 is a compact desktop mill that fits nicely in any office. It comes with an emergency stop switch that shuts down the machine at the push of a button. An integrated safety cover makes the cutting mechanism inaccessible during operation and keeps dust out of the surrounding environment.
